BODIES CONTAIN CELLS
Did you know that our bodies are built like brick houses? We have microscopic bricks, called cells, that fit together to build muscles, tissues, organs... everything!
CELLS CONTAIN MITOCHONDRIA
Inside each one of those cells are even tinier things called mitochondria. These itty bitty mitochondria make most of the energy our body uses. In fact, they make 90% of the energy we need to live! Mitochondria also play a big role in all the signaling that happens inside the cell.
SOME KIDS HAVE MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASE
The itty bitty mitochondria inside their body's microscopic cells do not make or use energy well. Their cells also have a hard time sending signals. Kids with Mitochondrial Disease get sick when their cells cannot power up, communicate well, and do what they are supposed to do. In other words, Mito kids have tired and cranky cells! Sometimes, those cranky cells get hurt, or stop working... and that is not fun!
